 Candidate for County Commissioner

District 2

Laura Dotson:
Your Voice,
Our Future

Thank you for your interest campaign! I’m Laura Dotson, running for County Commissioner District 2.

I have deep roots in Nassau County. My grandparents opened a dry cleaning business here in 1939 on North 3rd Street. My mother graduated from FHS, just as I did. My father served on the USS North Dakota in the Korean War before moving to Fernandina and meeting my mother. He later worked as an electrician at Westrock. I also have two older brothers here in Florida.

My career as a Flight Attendant started in 1991, and I will retire early next year after a 3 decade career. As you know, a flight attendant has many duties. I am also a Purser, taking the leadership role on long-haul international and domestic flights. Every year I complete required FAA training, as well as medical, emergency, and conflict resolution training.

Nassau County has always been home for me, even when I didn’t live here while raising my children. We came home every year while they were growing up, and we would rather be here than anywhere else in the world. We have seen a lot of change and growth in our County, and we must shepherd this growth with great care.

One way we can do this is by keeping taxes lower, giving back to families, and supporting affordable housing. We need more affordable housing for seniors, young families, and working people in Nassau County. Our families need our support and consideration.

Infrastructure matters. We should continue maintaining our infrastructure as our communities expand. The next 10 years in Nassau County are projected to bring 46.9% growth. That is massive growth. Friends, we need to ensure that we are preparing now and ready for tomorrow.

Wasteful spending must be investigated. We need to investigate further the $53 million in overspending exposed by the State CFO. That is a top priority. That is money that should be in your pockets. We want lower taxes and a budget rid of wasteful spending.

Here are examples I see firsthand in District 2:
• Beach access security booths at county beach access points are costing the county $500,000 per year, yet the city access at Seaside Park has never had a guard.
• A consultant was contracted for beach and sound surveys and coastal engineering analyses, leading to additional conservation signs parallel to the dune area on American Beach and Scott Road accesses. There were already posts there, yet we paid $144,850. Why?

Protecting children and families is also a priority. I will investigate why obscene materials are still in our library. We, as parents and grandparents, do not want young minds indoctrinated with books espousing transgenderism, witchcraft, racism, and socialist ideologies. These books have exponentially grown in number despite citizen groups protesting them and bringing attention to the issue with county commissioners and the county manager. Mr. Huppmann does not appear concerned or willing to take action. Concern is not enough. Action is required.

My priorities are clear:
• Lower taxes and regulation
• Transparency
• Family values
• Affordable housing
• Lifelong Republican values

I will work for the people of Nassau County. You are the voice. Let’s work together.

Thank you!
